Daydream with Infinite Light Tunnels

Nonotak Studio, comprised of Neomi Schipfer and Takami Nakamoto bring a new take on projection mapping, using multiple displays made out of translucent fabric to scatter projected light. Called Daydream (iteration V.4), the interactive experience features four screens arranged side-by-side giving the illusion of an infinite tunnel.

With four screens, Daydream instills an immersive 180-degree experience that can beam audiences to a new world of light. The reflective properties of the screen material allows the projected light to reflect around the screen, radiating unique patterns to the floor and ceiling. As Nakamoto describes, “When you get closer and closer to the installation, it’s not an object any more—you’re entering a virtual space created by layers of fabric.”

What’s neat is the additional combination of speakers around the room that enables spatialized audio. Audiences hear mixes of drones, glitches and a myriad of synthetic beats that fuse with the otherworldy visuals.

For tools, the authors use Ableton, which includes awesome audio software suites, along with Push, their pressure sensitive midi like device. The authors also make use of Resolume, a great projection mapping tool.

The piece is currently on display at the MU / STRP Festival for GLOW Next, in Eindhoven. Be sure to follow Nonotak to see where they take their next iteration.

The authors also displayed another fun piece called, Silhouettes, which uses 90 DMX controlled hallogen light bulbs to bring static objects to life. In the creator’s own words, “Dots become lines, lines become curves. Directions and trajectories are drawn, space becomes oriented and is set in motion. Space is not vacuum, literally, but it becomes matter and it starts dancing in a field of shadow and light. Everything is based on shadow. The canvas looks like it’s moving but the moving elements are only shadows. They are 10,000 wood sticks placed on a 4m by 2m canvas.” See Silhouettes below:
