Projection Mapping Without the Projector – Sharp’s New Free-Form Display

Sharp announced today that it will produce a new “Free-Form Display” that is able to take any shape (contour). Previously, LCD panels were limited to rectangular shapes. This is largely because there is a minimal width required for the bezel to accomodate the drive circuit. The Free-Form Display’s IGZO technology distributes the drive circuitry throughout the pixels on the display. This enables a really thin bezel, and the display to take any arbitrary contour.

Sharp has released two pictures demonstrating the display’s use in automobiles, which seems like a logical place to start. However, this technology has the potential to extend beyond this small use case, and into displays everywhere.

The large caveat is that there is no information about price, resolution, contrast, or the ability of the technology to scale to larger displays. So…projection mapping might need projectors for quite some time.
