Color Restored to Ara Pacis Altar in Rome

Set at the northern city limits of Rome, the Ara Pacis, or the “Altar to Peace,” would have been visible to travelers arriving through the port of Ostia.  Once brightly colored by the paint of Roman craftsman, the Altar has since lost its original hues.  However, in celebration of its 2,000th anniversary, projection mapping was used to return the splendid colors to the Ara Pacis Altar.  Vatican museum researchers were actually able to provide the exact colors that adorned the Altar when it was presented in 9 AD to the lighting technicians working on the projection mapping display.

The projection mapping upon the Altar cost the city roughly $100,000 for the one night event.  Unfortunately, projection mapping and history enthusiasts will need to wait until the next big celebration in Rome to see the Ara Pacis Altar “painted” in color again.  To find out more information, click here.
