Christie Digital (one of the largest makers of high-end projectors) recently showed off a mind-blowing display at InfoComm and SIGGRAPH 2013. I personally saw the display at SIGGRAPH and the video doesn’t come close to doing it justice.
They call it the “Interactive Design Studio” and it is a tour de force of projection mapping. 46 display units working in concert, to create a seamless and immersive display. While this is purely a tech demo, the dream is to “bring the car brochure to life,” allowing customers to preview different car stylings and colors from an accompanying app.
They used four seriously bright Christie G Series DHD550-G DLP projectors (5500 Lumens) for projection mapping onto the car itself. They also used forty-two Christie MicroTiles which are tileable displays typically used for display walls and digital signage. MicroTiles are hyrbrid DLP projection and LED displays that have almost no bevel between units and can scale into extremely large display sizes.
The content was driven from RTT DeltaGen, a high-end 3D visualization software. Christie focused on display fidelity over interactivity, so the display rate was somewhere around 1 frame per second. Then then used Christie Twist software (specific to Christie projectors) to blend and warp the content into place.
