Lucas Caesens and Pieter Steyart are the driving force behind Dorids, a hybrid multimedia company that does everything from projection mapping to interactive head-mounted displays. Recently, Dorids created “The Stage” at THILA 2013, which provided some exciting visuals for THILA 2013.
We had a chance to talk to Lucas and Pieter about their projection mapping work at THILA 2013. “The Stage” is a self-composed and built of wooden structures in the shape of triangles, which allowed for content to be generated and mapped in real time onto these elements and re-used for other xxtriangle structures. An iPad was used as a controller, but latency and screen space (the content was controlled with over 150 parameters!) created some difficulty during the show. According to Lucas and Pieter, nearly all of the software was either based upon open-source libraries and/or written from scratch, including GLSL shaders for content generation and a beat-detection system to drive the visuals. Check out all of the technical details on the Dorids website.
Dorids has a history of doing some really cool stuff, including the Hole 19 Helmet, an inexpensive VR system where an iPad is the display, The Creators, an audio-visual touch reactive experience (video below), and many more. Be sure to check out the rest of the Dorids portfolio, and keep an eye out for an upcoming spaceship art simulation, related to the Dorids Biomodd project (which was initiated by Angelo Vermeulen).
