Rihanna in a CAVE wins a VMA

In case you aren’t part of the 550 million people who have already watched this video, Calvin Harris’ This is What You Came For featuring Rihanna, uses copious amounts of projection. At the 2016 Visual Music Awards (VMAs) the video won for “Best Male Video”, and you can see in Calvin Harris’ acceptance speech.

The majority of the video has Rhianna walking around in a CAVE (an immersive VR environment using projectors on multiple flat screens). Besides straight VR, there are some interesting moments where they mix real and virtual, like real falling leaves mixed with a VR fall scene.

They also throw in some classic car projection mapping for good measure. 🙂

Rhinna2 The projection work was done by LA based PaintScaping, with content by Baked FX. The job took 7 Christie Digital 18K projectors, using an Alcorn McBride A/V Binloop HD player to feed seven Christie Digital 18K projectors. A beefy player is needed for frame synchronization of simultaneous videos playing across the projectors.
